100th Birthday Celebrations for Milford on Sea WI!

In the chill of last Saturday evening 120 ladies in their finery arrived at the Village Community Centre to celebrate one hundred years of Milford-on-Sea's Women's Institute. Among guests from other local institutes, they were pleased to welcome Lynne Stubbings, NFWI Chair, Maureen Levenson, HCFWI Chair, Ros Cooper, WI Advisor and Sue Whitlock, Milford Parish Councillor.

All were warmly greeted by a handsome doorman/cloakroom attendant (David, husband of Jan Gibbs, President) and one of a smartly dressed team of gentlemen who had been 'volunteered' to staff the bar, the kitchen and wait at table.

Andy Joseph headed a small team in the kitchen and produced a delicious meal worthy of at least two Michelin stars. Fortunately there was a lengthy pause before the candles were lit on a beautiful birthday cake, baked and decorated by Jacqui Evans.

Music & Arts Festival Fundraiser

We normally avoid featuring events in this news bulletin as they are all covered in Milford on sea Calendar: www.milfordonseacalendar.org

However, one of the gems of Milford on Sea is the Music & Arts Festival, and we like to support them whenever we can.

On the 6th April a fun fundraising evening is being held at the Community Centre and you might like to go along.

Here is how the event is described: "Join us and dress up in you best frocks and tails (or not) and be transported back in time for a fabulous evening of 1920's fun. With canapés and cocktails, ragtime music and a casino there will be something for everybody. Afterwards, the Polly Morris comedy band will lift your spirits even higher as you laugh your way through the buffet. Then, it’s time for the grand finale watching the Braces and Laces troop dazzle you with their fancy footwork which you can take on board for dancing the rest of the night away with the FB Pocket Orchestra who will take you back to the hot jazz, blues, ragtime & popular dances of the 1920/30s & earlier.

It is set to be a fun filled evening, so don’t miss out, book your tickets today at the MOS Community Centre ticket office”

Donation to Community First Responders from The Cave

The Cave wine shop & bar in Church Hill, Milford on Sea prides itself on being a part of the community so, for this New Year, owner/manager John Crouch created a huge prize hamper of products from the bar and shop and all the staff joined in to sell as many raffle tickets as they possibly could.

When the raffle was drawn, their efforts had raised nearly £300 which they donated to the Milford on Sea Community First Responders. Conrad Curtis and John Blessing visited to receive the cheque and thank John and his team for their splendid efforts.

Community First Responders (CFRs) are volunteers who operate as part of South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) and receive funding only though charitable donations from the community. Training is provided by SCAS and CFRs can find themselves being deployed to a range of incidents from falls to heart attacks, strokes and breathing difficulties.

The idea being that because they live in the community they can get to an incident very quickly when time is of the essence. Conrad Curtis said “we are really rather grateful to the efforts of John and his team. Kitting out a CFR is a significant outlay but it genuinely saves lives.” Milford CFRs are looking for new recruits so if you would like to know more why not call us on 01590 644393. You can make a difference.

About the Milford on Sea Community Responders

Milford on Sea has an established Community First Responders group which was established in 2017.

The Community First Responders support the South Central Ambulance Service and get deployed to appropriate emergency calls in the village. All are volunteers who donate their time and expertise for free. The group has been founded by Ross Woolgar, Terri Newton and Conrad Curtis.

The advantage of Community First Responders is that in many cases they can get there before the paramedics and commence life saving emergency treatment at the earliest opportunity, which significantly improves patients chances of survival.
