Historical Record Society wins National Lottery Support

Milford-on-Sea Historical Record Society [MOSHRS] has won National Lottery support for its Bringing History Home initiative.

Bringing History Home is focused on making over 100 years of local records readily accessible to the community of Milford-on-Sea as well as for those around the world who have connections with Milford-on-Sea. 

The initiative, which has been awarded an £8,700 Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant, is made possible through money raised by National Lottery players, together with contributions from the Parish Council and from MOSHRS itself.

The MOSHRS shall use presentations and displays to familiarise our community with on-line access to their catalogue using their new website. Local organisations will have the opportunity to learn about the MOSHRS archive, how to access it and how to contribute to it. The MOSHRS website will also provide downloadable guides for locally important historical buildings and trails.

In 2019, Milford-on-Sea will mark the bi-centenary of the death of our most famous resident, Admiral the Honourable Sir William Cornwallis, who was Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty’s Channel Fleet during the critical months leading up to the Battle of Trafalgar. 

The MOSHRS records provide some insights into the circumstances of Milford at that pivotal time in our nation’s history. Making those records more accessible to our local community will enhance understanding of our heritage..

Milford Charity has a Fundraising Challenge

Milford on Sea based charity, Freedom to Learn is launching an exciting fundraising challenge to raise a total of £4,000 from 40 donors in just 31 days with Global Giving, the largest crowdfunding community platform.

The charity, which works to improve the quality and access for some of the most vulnerable children in Nepal, has been selected by the GlobalGiving Foundation to take part in its Accelerator programme. 

This programmes requires charities to raise £4,000 from 40 donors throughout the month of December, in order to be permanently featured on the GlobalGiving’s website. 

Project Manager of Freedom to Learn, Joey Owen said: “This is an amazing opportunity for us and an opener to get into one of the world’s largest community crowdfunding websites.Freedom to Learn is launching a new fundraising challenge this Friday (1st December). I have attached a press release which details the challenge.

“We need to raise £4,000 from 40 donors in 31 days for us to secure a permanent spot on this website, which will enable us in the long term to benefit from corporate relationships, connect with new donors and access valuable online fundraising tools.”

Freedom to Learn works to improve the quality and access to education for some of the most vulnerable children in Nepal, helping more than 5000 children each year.

New Minibus Service to Everton from Milford on Sea

A New Minibus Service has been launched for local residents to and from Everton Post Office and Everton Garden Centre. 

The service runs:

• Every Wednesday morning from 29th November until 20th December.

• Leaves Milford at 9am, 10am and 11 am from Danestream House, opposite village car park. (Other pick up places can be arranged) 

• Returns at 9.45, 10.45 and 11.45 am. 

There is limited seating, so booking is advised.

St George's 1940's Open Day

As you may know, we don't normally promote events on the news, as they are covered on www.milfordonseacalendar.org  

However, on this occasion we are making an exception having received a letter from a fellow resident:

"I have attached a notice promoting a fun event that St Georges Care Home are holding. I was hoping it might also be of interest for your webpage.

My mother was in St Georges most of this year and passed away there in September. I have to say the care and expertise they showed in looking after her and in talking to me and the rest of the family was above and beyond anything I could have asked for."

You will find the details of the 1940's Open Day below and in the village calendar, so pop along, meet the team, explore, and enjoy the music.

Final Survey on Childrens Play Seafront Facilities

The Milford on Sea Parish Council are entering the final round of consultation for the proposed play facilities at the Sea front.

Today is 400'th edition of this News Bulletin and sod's law, nothing exciting to report!

My wife, and my constant mishaps continue to be a great source of material for 'news' articles, but sadly time does not allow the writing - however, they will be back some time next year- with gusto!

It is however worth giving a plug to our MoS Calendar which tells you all that is happening in the village. This weekend is particularly busy, and with Christmas coming it is worth keeping an eye on.

Milford on Sea RNLI Report

Fundraising events for 2017 concluded on Saturday 4th November with the Annual Christmas Fair at the Village Community Centre raising £466.80.

During the year the local RNLI Committee, led by chairman Ian Ramus, organised 8 fundraising events at various venues and together with collections on our annual Flag Day, Round the Island and Fastnet Race Days, the Royal Oak Bank Holiday Weekend and donations, £6500 will have been raised for the charity that saves lives at sea and on the beaches.

Also, during the year RNLI Souvenirs have been on sale at all our fundraising events and sales have totaled £2200 of which 60% is profit.

There will be some additional income during the rest of the year, as we are the named charity for the collection to be made at Carols on the Green in December and our collection boxes around the Village have still to be collected and the monies counted.

The Committee would welcome some help in the coming year and anyone interested in this worthy cause should contact the Secretary, Mrs Margaret Pruden on: 01590 645969.

Date Change for Newcomers Supper

For any exhibitors, community groups, clubs or newcomers to the village looking forward to attending the annual ‘Newcomers Supper’ next year, please note that the date has changed to Saturday 13th October 2018.

This is an event so many people look forward to, and once again there will be a special evening for all involved next Autumn.

About The ‘Newcomers Supper’

This special village event is held to welcome all newcomers to the village in All Saints Church Hall in Milford on Sea.

Anyone that was new to the village in 2017 is able to apply for an invitation, - and the event is entirely free.

This informal evening is great to meet other new people to the village & a selection of village people. (That's residents, not the old pop group!)

The Milford on Sea Newcomers Supper evening consists of two parts: 

Newcomers arrive at 6pm to visit the exhibition and wander around informally meeting representatives from the many clubs, associations & organisations in the village. They can tell you anything you want to know, and if you fancy getting involved you can.

At 7.15pm the exhibition is followed by a free sit down supper with the chance to meet new people & have a bit of fun.

Come & enjoy a free drink & supper meal, together with entertainment, lots of fun and laughter, and which ends with the Milford song!

Most years the event has over a hundred people attending, and it is a great way to meet new people, and to get a warm welcome to your new home. The village is full of friendly people and the ‘Newcomers Supper’ is a fast-track way of getting to know all about our village life.

The ‘Newcomers Supper’ is funded & hosted by all of the churches in the village & tirelessly organised by Ruth Bufton.

Mandy Preece, soul midwife (holistic end of life companion) and volunteer ambassador for Macmillan Caring Locally, will be attending the Positive Living Group next Wednesday the 8th November to share her knowledge and offering a fresh look at how to listen and be supportive. She calls this Being Rock.

Being Rock is a simple concept of being able to support anyone when they are struggling or just having a bad day. And the great news is we can all do it! Mandy believes we just have to follow some simple ‘Rock rules’ to become better partners, parents, friends and work colleagues.

Humorous, inspiring and thought-provoking, Being Rock changes our perception of what it means to listen. 

Mandy will be sharing ways that can help us to be more compassionate and capable at helping others in their time of need.

Hurst on the Hill Pop Up

Hurst on the Hill in Milford on Sea village centre, held their first 'Pop Up Restaurant' on Saturday 28th October 2017.

Accomplished village chef, Jesse Wells served a seven course tasting menu for 14 lucky dinners. Helping with the organisation and front of house was his partner, Mary-Kate who is also very experienced in the restaurant trade, and at other times she can also be found in The Cave with a cheery greeting for all customers.

The evenings dishes used ingredients that the kitchen team foraged and shot themselves. (Including pigeon and duck.)

Jesse has learnt his trade in a number of local restaurants, including Verveine and La Perle, he also worked with Simon Rogan at the 2 Michelin star L'Enclume restaurant in Cumbria.

Hurst on the Hill will be holding their next 'Pop Up Restaurant', again with foraged ingredients, this coming Saturday Saturday 4th November 2017 - and Jesse is looking forward to many more exciting evening in Hurst on the Hill.
